Carole Borges Carole Borges

Carole Borges was born on the south side of Chicago. She spent most of her childhood on the Mississippi River living aboard the schooner Elizabeth, traveling-- to that spot just beyond the horizon. Borges, the author of Disciplining the Devil’s Country by Alice James Press, is a widely published writer. Her poems have appeared in Poetry, Kalliope, Crosscurrents, and numerous other literary magazines. Her non-fiction articles appear in national magazines such as Rudder, Vegetarian Digest and Review, and The Horseman’s Journal.
In 1986, a series of her essays was featured in the North Shore Sunday magazine in Massachusetts. As a freelance journalist, her work has been featured in the Lynn Item and Dorchester Community News in Boston, and the West Side Gazette and the Hollywood Boulevard newspapers in Ft. Lauderdale. Twice she was nominated for a Pushcart Prize and in 1987 was the recipient of an award by the Massachusetts Artist’s Foundation.
As a graduate of the Vermont College MFA Program, Borges was fortunate to have some of the best writing teachers in the country. Mark Doty says,“Carole Borges’ poems are risky in the best sense of the word. She is fully willing to see and be seen, to know and be known.”
Besides being a busy writer, Borges has also had wide experience as a workshop instructor. Her “Writing Your Family Memories” classes as well as her “Artist Way” classes have been presented in a variety of settings. She has also served as a workshop mentor at the East Coast Writing Conference and the Florida Scholastic Press Association’s Workshop for High School Seniors.
As a former faculty member of Salem State College, Bradford College, and Broward Community College, her interest in diversity highlighted her achievements. A presentation of her work tracing the affect of African rhetorical styles on modern African-American literature was featured at Broward Community College’s “Spring Writes”. She has also taught in-service workshops on diversity to faculty members at Salem State and Broward.
While living in Key West, Borges was a guide for the Literary Walking Tours presented by the Key West Literary Seminar organization.
Currently, Carole Borges lives in North Knoxville. She spends most of her time writing or playing in her garden with her white cat, Itchiban Buzaki-chan. She also writes weekly articles for the Enlightener, a regional African American newspaper. She is a member of the Knoxville Writers’ Guild board of directors and membership committee chairperson.
