Alex Gabbard

Alex Gabbard Alex Gabbard is an internationally acclaimed author of 16 books, hundreds of magazine and newspaper features, and thousands of published photos. To his credit after some thirty years of writing for broad commercial markets, he has received two “Book of the Year” awards and Moto Awards as the premier work in the field granted by the International Automotive Journalism Assn.

Numerous other awards include an International Automotive Media Assn. Silver Medal for travel writing, an History Channel medal, a “Poet of Merit” award granted by the International Society of Poets, and the honor of having one of his books, Blood of the Roses, selected as a “Freedom Book of the Month” featured by the “Freedom Network” as, “One work of fiction or non-fiction that we judge to be the most valuable, interesting new contribution to the literature of liberty.”

In capturing his Appalachian region “southern upbringing”, his compelling Return to Thunder Road has achieved multiple editions and printings as an enduring favorite. His Checkmate, a novel of nuclear intrigue set in modern-day Oak Ridge, TN was considered for film by Red Wagon Entertainment who reviewed the book as “An awfully fun read”. His 16th book, Adventures of an H-Bomb Mechanic, is his own story of being a “Top Boomer” during the Cold War, one of the few US military nuclear warhead mechanics who serviced highly classified armaments, the real things that were always ready. This odyssey into the shadows of secrecy tells of becoming a Viet Nam era draftee who wore the uniform of a sailor rather than a soldier, then unfolds along paths that wind their way into cryptic, clandestine service as a Top Secret operative for a little known agency of the US government, deep into the obscure world of nuclear warheads and secret facilities told as adventures beyond his wildest imagination.

This early-life influence carried Alex on to advanced studies in science to become an atomic physicist, then 25 years as a research scientist at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, now retired.

As owner of Gabbard Publications, Alex has run his business for thirty years as a publisher of books and supplier of magazine and newspaper features and stock photos, the later a lifetime accumulation as participant in many venues, always with a camera in hand. His work has resulted in part from on-the-road testing of motor vehicles for Ford Motor Co, General Motors, and Chrysler Corp. for media print. His work has appeared in dozens of nationally circulated newsstand periodicals.

Continuing active pursuit of writing, though reduced from his previously hectic schedule of juggling two demanding careers at the same time, Alex has functioned as board member of a writing organization, instructor of numerous “how-to” courses on writing, publishing, photography and other topics of interest to aspiring writers, and continues to compose. His most recent effort, Gaspee, is a novel of historical fiction scheduled for casebound publication during the fall of 2006.
