Come to the meetings! 2009

Each meeting involves a brief summary of KWG activities followed by a program that includes noted individuals, both local and national, from the writing and publishing fields. Speakers and programs include:

JANUARY 8: Karen E. Reynolds: Singer-songwriter. “How the songwriter writes.” Reynolds is a singer songwriter based in Knoxville, TN. She owns and operates a career consultation agency for independent artists, has served as producer, promoter, agent or publicist for Karen E. Reynolds, singer-songwritermany nationally known artists and also teaches songwriting and music business for the University of Tennessee. She is the host and program director for Writer's Block, a radio program and concert series that is broadcast worldwide, and has performed alongside many well known artists. She is also a mentor for the Country Music Hall of Fame's prestigious, "Words & Music In Schools" program and was honored this past season for her work there, by joining Trisha Yearwood and others in concert at the Ford Theatre in Nashville. Karen signed a publishing deal with Wolf Publishing, Nashville, in early 2007 and freelances as an independent radio promotion consultant for both major and independent publishers. She has been nationally recognized for her songwriting, as well as her work with Independent artists, by such organizations as Americana Highway, Indiegrrl, Just Plain Folks and more.

FEBRUARY 5: Prof. Carole Parker, UT College of Law: “What writers should know about libel, slander and copyright law.”

MARCH 5: Linda Marion; reading from her book of poetry, Mother Land, and discussion issues of writing about your family

APRIL 2: Marilyn Kallet: reading from her new book, Packing Light and practicum on preparing for public readings

MAY 7: Kali Meister: UT Library Writer in Residence. The writer as performance artist.

JUNE 4: New mags on the block: Donna Rosseland, Editor of Eva and Elizabeth Wright and/or Dane Baker of Knoxville Voice discuss the challenges of breaking in and what they look for in magazine writing.

JULY 2: Open Mic

AUGUST 6: Linda Parris-Bailey of Carpetbag Theater, on her 40 year explorations of community-based, story-based plays of the African-American experience.

SEPTEMBER 3: Shannon Burke reading from Safelight and Black Flies. “His novels
are searing and morally resonant,” says the New York Times. Burke commutes between Knoxville and Hollywood. He’ll discuss challenges of translating page to screen.

OCTOBER 1: To Be Announced.

NOVEMBER 5: Marianne Worthington reads from her work and leads discussion of revision practice.

DECEMBER 3: Holiday pot luck and open mic.
