December: Naturalist,
zoologist,and author of several children's books, Doris Gove, read
from her most recent book, Exploring the Appalachian Trail: Hikes
in the Southern Appalachians published by Stackpole Books. In addition
to trail descriptions, this guide is filled with cultural and natural history
notes. Gove's children's books include: Miracle at Egg Rock: A Puffin's
Story; A Watersnake's Year; One Rainy Night; and
Red-Spotted Newt.
November:Cary Holladay
, author of two collections of short stories, The People Down South
and Palace of the Wasted Footsteps, as well as numerous poems
and essays published in Kenyon Review, Southern Review, Virginia
Quarterly Review, and Missouri Review.
October: Readings by
the winners of the Les Garrett Contest:
- First Place: Linda
Seals Talbert, short story, "Eyewitness."
- Second Place: Alison
Condie Jaenicke, short story, "Shelter."
- Third Place: Samuel
Manickham, short story, "Breakfast on the Beach."
September: Merikay
Waldvogel, an author of four books and a widely recognized authority
on quilts, discussed research techniques using traditional and non-traditional
sources in her latest book, Southern Quilts: Surviving Relics of the
Civil War . In addition to reading excerpts from women'sdiaries and
letters featured in the book, Waldvogel brought examples of Civil War era
quilts and garments to share with the audience.
