Merikay Waldvogel

Merikay Waldvogel, a nationally known quilt authority, is an author, curator, and lecturer focusing on quilts and women's lives.  Raised in the Midwest, she first taught English in Chicago and then moved to Knoxville in 1977.  Her interest in quilts led her to ask Southern women to tell their stories, and a writing career began.  In 1986, she wrote Quilts of  Tennessee:  Images of Domestic Life Prior to 1930 with Bets Ramsey, based on their statewide quilt search.  Merikay's other books are:   Soft Covers for Hard Times:  Quiltmaking and the Great Depression; Patchwork Souvenirs of the 1933 Chicago World's Fair; and Southern Quilts:  Surviving Relics of the Civil War.

Merikay has a B.A. in French from Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois and an M.S. in Linguistics from the University of Michigan.  She taught English as a Second Language in the Chicago Public Schools and the University of Tennessee.  She is a past Board member of the American Quilt Study Group and the Knoxville Writers' Guild.
