Freelance writer and editor Mary C. Weaver has 18 years’ experience in every phase of editorial work, from initial concept and idea development to camera-ready copy. Her first book, Burpee Basics: Roses, was published by Macmillan in December 1998.

A freelance editor for Home & Garden Television’s DIY cable-network web site, Weaver was HGTV’s freelance print editor between March 1995 and November 1997. In May 1996 she launched the network’s HGTV Ideas magazine, which covers a wide range of service topics, including gardening, landscaping, design, decorating, and crafts.

She has written for, edited, and managed service and how-to magazines on topics ranging from prenatal care and storytelling to information systems. Nearly 100 of her articles have been published in special-interest magazines. Current clients include Self-Employed America magazine, My Business magazine, and Discovery.com.

In 1999 her article “Battle the Millennium Bug and Win,” written for Self-Employed America, won a SmallBizPlanet.com Award, technology category. In 1993 Storytelling Magazine, which she launched in 1989 and edited and managed through 1993, won its category (internal magazine, nonprofit) in the Women in Communications Inc. National Clarion Awards competition. In 1991 Storytelling Magazine won the American Society of Association Executives’ Gold Circle Award as the best association magazine produced by an organization with an annual budget of less than $2 million.

From September 1996 through December 1999 she was gardening columnist for the Knoxville News-Sentinel. Her column, Almost Eden, appeared monthly in the paper’s home and garden section.

Self-employed since November 1988, Weaver spent six years as an editor and copy chief for the now-defunct magazine publisher Whittle Communications.
