| Writing Women Group The Knoxville Writers' Guild’s "Writing Women" group was initiated and facilitated for six years by Doris Ivie. Ivie envisioned and conducted the group as "an egalitarian, co-facilitated group designed to inspire each member to write a little more than she otherwise might." Anyone is welcome to facilitate the group. Each participant is encouraged to suggest writing exercises that she has found helpful or would like to try in a group setting. Each attendee is asked to bring one work she would like to share to each meeting -- one of her own compositions, something she wishes she had written, or something that "speaks to" her. If the work is the writer's own, she is encouraged to bring multiple copies. New members are asked to distribute copies of a 100-word "autobiography" including such information as who the new member perceives herself to be, what her life journey has been like so far, her personal and writing aspirations, etc. New members may also elect to simply show up empty-handed. Monthly attendance varies from two to eight people. Meetings generally consist of sharing members' new works, discussing current writing news, engaging in a 20-minute writing exercise, and optional sharing of the products of the writing exercise. The focus of this group is mutual encouragement, not critique. |
